I know I haven’t posted anything in AGES but I’ve been super busy with uni and Tumblr had to sort of take a back seat :( So I’m sorry, but I’m still not going to be back completely for about another month or so, as I’ve got exams coming up.
But this doesn’t mean I haven’t/won’t still be reading, and when I get another spare five minutes I’ll do a little post on what I have been reading since I was last on here and what I’m currently reading :) And summer is ALWAYS the perfect time for reading as many books as I can get my hands on, so I’ll be busy on here when exams finish, around the 20th June :)
I’ll try and do some stuff when I’m free and queue it so that’s at least something, but I’m super excited for exams to be finished and I can get back here properly! :)
I was apprehensive about reading this boo, because of what I’d heard about the writing style, and how because it was from a child’s point of view it became tedious and was hard to follow. At first, it sort of grated on me. I couldn’t get my head round it properly and it was weird how the bed was Bed, a lamp was Lamp, everything was given names. But it never once put me off finishing the book. I quickly grew used to the style of writing, and overall it added so much to the book, in the sense of the impact it made because it really made me realised that this was written from a childs point of view, that this was his life.
Considering their life would have been so boring, and so repetitive, the story was not at all. Each day was different but still important and we learnt new things about their life all the time. I thought it was really interesting to see things from his point of view that he didn’t understand, such as the ‘scream’ they did each day at a specific time, that he thought was just a scream. It was also really interesting to see how his mother had explained everything to him, such as what they saw on TV and why their lives weren’t that. It was so thought provoking to consider what I would’ve done in her place, and I really enjoyed that part of the story.
I thought more of the story would’ve taken place in the room, but that would’ve easily lead the story to becoming boring and repetitive and I think if it had have been written that way, it would have left me, and surely other readers, wanting to know what had happened afterwards, so I think a good balance in carrying the plot along was achieved.
Overall, a brilliant read and I thoroughly recommend it - 4 out of 5 stars
